Zits

Zits is a long-running newspaper comic strip about the life of a high school sophomore living in a suburb in the American Midwest. It features his family, his social life, his time in school, and his dreams for the future.

As it happens, when the strip launched in 1997 I was also a high school student living in a suburb in the American Midwest. While my personality and interests didn’t map perfectly to those of the strip’s protagonist, I found it highly relatable and for me it was basically a successor to Calvin & Hobbes.

  Sara Toomey

  Sara Toomey is the main love interest and sometime-girlfriend of Zits protagonist Jeremy Duncan. Kind and down to earth, Sara also serves as a contrast to Jeremy’s laziness - she’s more active, organized, and responsible.

  In high school and early college, I identified strongly with Jeremy and Sara was exactly the sort of girl I was interested in. I dated girls like Sara.
